Overview
Presented by Hart House Theatre and the U of T Drama Coalition
The Hart House University of Toronto Drama Festival is a competitive festival intended to provide an encouraging platform for the development of student talents, promotion of creativity and the recognition of excellence in theatrical performance and production. The festival provides an opportunity for U of T students from all campuses to compete for fun and adjudicated awards.
The Hart House University of Toronto Drama Festival has spawned numerous performers who have gone on to become stars of stage and screen: Ted Follows, David Gardner, Don Harron, Arthur Hiller, William Hutt and Donald Sutherland – to name a few. Over 80 years since its inception in 1936, and since Trevor Rines resurrected it in 1993, the U of T Drama Festival has provided a high profile showcase for up-and-coming theatrical talent and, when the doors are open, an accessible avenue for U of T students to perform and direct on the historic Hart House Theatre stage.
About
Every winter, original student-written one-act plays compete for six coveted awards during this adjudicated festival. This year, entries had the option to film on stage, with COVID restrictions permitting, or submit a virtual entry. Filming took place between February 28 and March 15. Our adjudicator provided both public (recorded) and private feedback to all entries. All entries have been packaged as episodes and will be released on March 27 in celebration of World Theatre Day.
Episodes will premiere at 12 pm, 3 pm, 6 pm, and the awards ceremony will be broadcast at 8 pm, where participants are recognized for their outstanding contributions. Join in and Celebrate World Theatre Day and discover the new and emerging voices of Canada's theatre scene!

**About the Donald Sutherland Award for Best Performance and the Janet Bessey Award for Excellence in Stage Management:
These awards were established after a generous donation by Mr. Sutherland and Ms. Bessey, and allows them the ability to continue to be engaged and updated on the student drama and student engagement that happens here at Hart House Theatre. The winners of these awards are photographed the day of the Awards Ceremony and write a letter to Mr. Sutherland/Ms. Bessey regarding their experience in the Festival.
