About the program:
The Hart House Hip Hop Education Program is a one-of-a-kind initiative designed to provide a platform for students, artists, dancers, musicians and enthusiasts to explore Hip Hop as an art form and a tool for personal and social development. With an emphasis on education, self-expression and community engagement, our program goes beyond the surface to delve into the rich history, cultural significance and creative potential of Hip Hop.

We do it for the Culture – a Hip-Hop @ 50 Event Series. Yes, Hip Hop is 50! August 11, 1973 is widely considered the birthday of Hip Hop. In honour of this milestone, we’re shedding light on the past, present and future of Hip Hop in Canada. In the Fall Term, 2023, we invite you to join us for keynote speeches, hands-on workshops, film screenings and a guest list that reads like a ‘who’s who’ of Canadian Hip-Hop.

Unleash your inner creativity and join our Producers' Circle and Lyricists' Lounge. If you’re a beatmaker, emcee, producer, artist or anywhere in between, you want to attend these bi-weekly meetups that focus on building community skills, performance, and developing and exercising creative and artistic muscles.

Winter 2024
Celebrating 50 Years of Women and Gender Expression in Hip Hop.
Join us for a series of workshops titled Social Dance 101: The Fundamentals of Hip Hop Dance Culture, that combine education of social dance and movement fundamentals of social dance. Each workshop will feature a special guest instructor, fun warm up workouts, dance instruction and some Hip Hop knowledge! Styles include old-school Hip Hop, Locking, Popping, Breaking, House, Krump as well as Voguing, Whacking, Litefeet, Chicago Footwork, and more!
Join us to add some extra dance know-how to your repertoire or just enjoy a great work out set to an energizing playlist.
It's Bigger Than Hip Hop II: Celebrating 50 Years of Women and Gender Expression in Hip Hop, is a five-week certificate course led by Dr. Francesca D’Amico-Cuthbert that will feature special guests and focus on the history of Hip Hop culture and the role that women have played in its development since its inception fifty years ago. Through a Hip Hop Education and Get Crafty mash up, we will do a special women themed medallion making workshop that recalls the historical meaning of medallions to Hip Hop and pays special attention paid to the women who helped build the culture. Be sure to drop in.
