The opening of Hart House and the laying of the cornerstone for the Soldiers’ Tower. The Globe, November 12, 1919.

This year, we are marking the 100th anniversary of Hart House. On September 15, 2019, you’re invited to our largest open house to date where you can engage with all the people, activities and spaces that have defined Hart House over the past century.

100 years ago, on November 11, 1919, the University of Toronto marked a momentous day with an unprecedented unveiling. World War I had ended one year before, and on the anniversary of the first Armistice Day, Hart House was officially gifted to the University of Toronto for the enjoyment of its students. During the war, Hart House had been used to support the war effort from training students in the basement, to rehabilitating soldiers upstairs. With the end of the war, it was time for Hart House to serve its intended purpose: to serve as a space for learning and discovery outside the classroom.

Take a look at some of the defining elements of Hart House that have evolved over the past century, and get ready for Open (Hart) House on September 15, from 2 pm to 5 pm, where you’re invited to re-connect with old friends and discover Hart House again for the first time.

Today, in 2019 the University of Toronto welcomed back 91,286 students. Hart House is now an inclusive gathering place for students and community members to come together, in all their diversity, to take delight in the sheer joy of discovering new things about themselves, each other and the world that we all share.

From Spring 2019–Spring 2020, Hart House will celebrate its 100th anniversary. We welcome students and staff on all three campuses and the broader GTA community to join us in supporting one hundred years of “true education.”
