About

The Hart House Theatre Classical Theatre Slam in partnership with Shakespeare BASH’d is a part of our continuing initiative to engage emerging actors, and U of T students, in a showcase event. This Slam is a fun performance opportunity for actors and artists of all experience levels to increase accessibility and inclusivity in the theatre community through the use of non-contemporary text. This exciting performance opportunity will provide students and emerging artists with a chance to share their passion for performance while competing for awards and prizes. We are thrilled to once again have Shakespeare Bash'd co-artistic directors James Wallis and Julia Nish-Lapidus return to judge this year's competition, alongside Stratford Festival and Hart House Theatre alum, Amaka Umeh!

Classical Theatre Slam Important Information

From the initial video submissions, the judges will short-list a small group of performers to be involved in a live performance event taking place on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 pm, where judges will give feedback and select the Slam’s winners. As an educational opportunity, all submissions are guaranteed written feedback from the Competition Judges from their initial submission.

You are allowed to perform any monologue or piece of classical text from a play, written before 1900 or an adaptation based on classical text. For this Slam, we encourage you to make adaptations of pre-existing text in any way you can think of, such as changing genders or contexts, to broaden the scope of what traditional classical text can look like. Examples of writers include William Shakespeare, Aphra Behn, Guan Hanqing, John Webster, Thomas Dekker, John Dryden, Moliere, and more. We strongly encourage submissions from beyond the Western Canon, to include and celebrate a diverse range of classical narratives and stories from all places. Check out this comprehensive resource list to find potential performance pieces.

Submissions will be reviewed by judges and the live performers will be informed by Tuesday, May 7, 2024, and will have 24 hours to accept this performance opportunity. The Classical Theatre Slam Performance will take place on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:30 pm — 9:30 pm. This is a free event and all members of the community are encouraged to attend the live performance. Performers participating in the live event will receive a $25 gift card and the panel of Judges will choose the top 3 performances. There will also be an Award of Merit chosen by the Competition Judges from the remaining submissions not selected for the live performance opportunity.

In addition to performing at Hart House Theatre, the winner of the 2024 Classical Theatre Slam will receive a two-hour private coaching session courtesy of Shakespeare BASH’d.
