Hart House Jazz Ensemble

Introduction

The Hart House Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo are active and vibrant bands made up of members from different colleges and campus communities united in one common interest: a love of jazz music.

The Jazz Combo is a group of 5 to 8 members that focuses on small group dynamics, standard jazz repertoire, musical interplay and improvisation. The Hart House Jazz Ensemble is an 18-piece big band that plays large ensemble repertoire from the 1940s all the way to current day arrangements. The group often features special guest performers, and guest vocalists.

Auditions for all members take place at the beginning of every school year following an open rehearsal. Rehearsals are Monday nights; the Jazz Combo rehearses from 6-7:15 pm and the Ensemble rehearses from 7:30-9:30 pm

Like all Hart House clubs, membership is open to all. The ensemble is conducted by bandleader Anders Azzopardi. Performance opportunities include the Arbor Room, The Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar as well as at festivals in the Greater Toronto Area.
