Naginata
Instructor:
This class is dedicated to the practice and study of Atarashii Naginata (Modern Naginata). Naginata is derived from an ancient Japanese weapon art which utilizes a glaive or pole-arm type weapon for offensive as well as defensive techniques. The art has two main components. The first consists of a series of Kata or Forms from which students learn the basic striking points, blocks and footwork. The second is free form sparring. A student who has acquired an exceptional grasp of basics will start to practice with armor (bogu) and learn to strike protected parts of the body directly. This dynamic art places a strong emphasis on martial arts etiquette, form, and respect for others while helping the practitioner to improve balance, concentration, coordination, strength and spirit.
