This Hip Hop Café is presented to you by Hart House, International Education Centre, and Student Housing & Residence Life
No matter what country, community or background you come from, there have been, and will continue to be, two hip hop constants ubiquitous in the culture: speaking one's truth and keeping it real.
And that's exactly what countless international rappers, producers, visual artists, dancers, entrepreneurs and knowledge-keepers are doing. Even though hip hop culture was a uniquely American creation, its foundations were truly intended to have a universal appeal. Speaking truth to power, expressing oneself, and lifting one's community know no borders.
In the wake of hip hop's worldwide success, we're looking at hip hop through an international lens, investigating how beats, rhymes, art and action are manifest in cities and communities many, many kilometers from its birth in NYC. It's an intercontinental, intersectional Hip Hop 101 Café.
