The 2018–2019 Hart House Global Commons will connect students in Canada with others in Colombia, the United States, South Africa and France, along with a wide range of community partners and civil society actors to explore these and other questions and actions geared towards building better societies that reflect, uphold and institutionalize the full equality of women.
Your specific campus will have a location where you will meet in-person for this session. It will be provided on your confirmation email, and through follow-up communications from the event organizers.
This is the classic Global Commons experience, joining all locations for an exciting real-time discussion between students and civil society actors, taking women’s rights through local political and socioeconomic participation as a starting point.

Garvia Bailey loves to tell stories, but her passion is in helping others share theirs. She’s most recently told the story of jazz and the colourful musicians who inhabit that world as host of Good Morning, Toronto on JazzFM.91—Jazz and the Arts. Previously, she spent ten years with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as an arts journalist/producer and broadcaster.
She began her career as a producer and writer for a groundbreaking startup media company, making independent documentaries from around the world. While with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, she served as the host of a variety of radio programs, including Big City Small World and Canada Live; as a columnist for Metro Morning and as a contributor at cbcmusic.ca, CBC Television, as well as a producer on the documentary programs Out In the Open and Global Village and Tapestry. She has been tapped as a commentator on CBC’s flagship news program, The National.
Throughout her career in broadcasting she has turned the spotlight on emerging talent from across the GTA and has interviewed many celebrated international artists, including cultural pundit Roxane Gay, author Lawrence Hill, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, director John Singleton, actor Chris Tucker and jazz icon Tony Bennett among many others. Garvia brings wit, warmth and curiosity to her interviews, qualities that set her apart as an interviewer, broadcaster and onstage host. Garvia is currently working on her own major photo/storytelling exhibit with Toronto based Black Artist in Dialogue (BAND) and with multi-media production company, Pop Sandbox, telling the stories of Toronto neighbourhoods.

Opening RemarksJennifer Hollett
Jennifer Hollett is a leader in tech, media and politics. Her career began in the late ‘90s, when digital wasn’t yet called digital at Sony Music Canada, where she became the company’s youngest manager, developing new media strategies for the label’s top artists. Jennifer also co-founded a startup and developed “Super PAC App,” which debuted #1 in its category in the App Store, helping make political TV ads more transparent. Most recently she was the head of news and government at Twitter Canada.
As an award-winning TV reporter and producer, Jennifer has over a decade of experience at CBC, CTV and MuchMusic covering stories across Canada and around the world. She won a Canadian Online Publishing Award for her work hosting CBC’s G20 Street Level blog during the 2010 G20 Summit in Toronto, and was recognized by Amnesty International Canada with a 2009 Media Award for her CBC radio reporting from Israel and Palestine. She continues to appear frequently as a commentator on Newstalk 1010, CP24 and CBC.
Jennifer made front page news as a candidate for Toronto city councillor in 2018 as part of a legal challenge to Bill 5, Premier Doug Ford’s cut to city council during the election campaign. She was also the federal NDP candidate for University-Rosedale in 2015, one of the country’s top races to watch. She studied public policy at Harvard University, obtaining her MPA. Driven by a passion for social justice, she has worked with Journalists for Human Rights, CARE Canada, and Plan Canada. She is a strong advocate for women’s and girls’ rights, and has moderated the G(irls)20 Summit in Toronto, Paris, Mexico City, Moscow and Sydney.
