Get creative, get empowered, get crafty!

Overview

Join us Thursdays from 11am–1pm for free drop-in crafting sessions and workshops. Learn basic skills for various crafts including sewing, papercraft, collage, printing, painting, and more.

We provide everything, including all the tools and materials. Or, bring whatever you are working on, hang out in a big comfy chair, trade tips with other crafters, and catch up with some old friends while meeting new ones over all things crafty.

Get Crafty is your weekly craft interlude on the U of T campus and your opportunity to take a break and de-stress. Quick and cool crafts add a little creativity to your day.

Tools and materials will be provided. No prior experience is required.

DIY Journals

The new school year is a perfect opportunity to start new habits, including regularly writing in a journal. We will share creative ways to design and make your journal, whether it is bullet journaling, for meditation, gratitude journaling, or any other use you may have. Add a personal touch to your existing journal or make one from scratch. Or create some journals to give out as a gift!

Buttonmaking

Get Crafty! and Drop-in and De-stress invite you to join us at our buttonmaking station as part of Xplore Hart House! You'll have a chance to make awesome DIY buttons using glitter, colouring, stickers, and more!

Button-making machines and button supplies will be provided. No prior experience is required.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day Beading Project with Jenny Blackbird

Get Crafty! features a follow-along beading video tutorial by Jenny Blackbird produced by First Nations House and Ciimaan/Kahuwe’yá/Qajaq (CKQ), to teach us how to make a beaded and not beaded Orange Shirt Pin for the Orange Shirt Day awareness campaign, which seeks to educate about our history of residential schools and honours those who survived, and did not survive, residential school experiences.  

Tools and materials will be provided. No prior experience is required.  

For those who want to participate from home, a limited number of beading kits are available (please contact Saša Rajšić by September 12, 2022, to request a kit for pick up at Hart House or by mail in Canada).

Shibori Indigo Tie Dye

In our Shibori Indigo Tie Dye crafting session, you will learn the basics of Shibori folding and binding techniques to create patterns on fabric with indigo dye. You will create one-of-a-kind patterns for yourself or give them as gifts!

Papel Picado

Make your own Papel Picado! Papel Picado is the traditional art of cutting elaborate designs into pieces of delicate tissue paper from Mexico. Keep your Papel Picado, gift it, or add it to the Ofrenda in the Map Room.  

All materials will be provided, and this event is drop-in.

Watercolour Bookmarks

Are you looking for a new bookmark to help with your class readings and a fun way to de-stress with your friends? Watercolour painting is a great opportunity to learn a new craft skill and take some time for mindfulness!

Halloween Headbands

Halloween is fast approaching! Let’s create a simple Halloween costume by making Halloween Headbands! We will provide headbands and teach you to cut out cat ears, a witch’s hat, or more to design the perfect Halloween accessory.

Friendship Bracelets

Friendship bracelets are the perfect easy craft to create with your friends! This Thursday we will be making friendship bracelets. There are so many different styles of friendship bracelets to make! We will teach tutorials on simple bracelet knots and provide patterns for your project. We can’t wait to see what you create!

Hand-Stitching Heading Pads

With the weather getting colder in Toronto, join us during reading week to hand-sew your own heating pads! These heating pads are very easy to make and just require a microwave to heat up! Use this heating pad on sore muscles throughout the winter!

Heating pad materials will be provided, and this event is a drop-in.

Gift Bags and Tags

The holiday season is fast approaching so let’s make some gift bags and tags! Using scrap paper, magazines, and leftover wrapping paper we will learn to fold and create gift bags for the holidays!

Taking a bath is a great way to de-stress after a long day of classes, especially in this cold weather! Join us to make your own lotion bars and bath bombs!

Essential Oils in Roller Ball Bottles

Feeling overwhelmed with exams coming up? Let’s make some essential oils in roller ball bottles to de-stress before exams! Make your own signature essential oil scent to take with you anywhere with these awesome roller ball bottles! Bring your friends to this tutorial, we can’t wait to see you there for our last Get Crafty tutorial of the semester!

Essential oil materials will be provided, and this event is a drop-in.
