Overview

A free virtual space that’s all about making stuff, trying new things, and getting creative with the things you have on hand at home. We’ll lead you through hands-on activities in a fun and friendly atmosphere so that you’ll be making crafts in no time, no matter what your skill level or experience. Take a break, make yourself a cup of tea, grab a pen and let’s get to playing, making, and being creative together.

No special tools or techniques required, just a bit of curiosity, creativity and your presence. All welcome!

Decorate Your Space with Plants-tips, tricks, and DIYs

Add some style and calm to your dorm room or apartment with plants. We’ll show you a few easy tips and tricks for styling your plants and teach you how to make a simple holder to hang plants in your space.

Tools & Materials:

  • Plant pot of your choice
  • Macrame cord or any twine or rope
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Scissors
  • Beads (holes must fit over your rope optional)

Abstract Water Colour Cards and Watercolour Basics Tutorial

Experiment with watercolour paints while creating inspirational circular cards to share or keep! In this session, we will give you an overview of basic watercolour techniques to make beautiful images, no matter what your skill level.

Tools & Materials:

  • watercolour paints with brushes 
  • watercolour or thicker paper 
  • paper towel or kleenex 
  • 2 jars or glasses for water

Optional, but nice to have on hand:

  • Masking tape to tape your paper down 
  • Salt 
  • Saran wrap (just a little piece) 
  • White crayon

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation Orange Shirt Beading Project with Jenny Blackbird

Get Crafty features a beading tutorial by Jenny Blackbird produced by First Nations House and Ciimaan/Kahuwe’yá/Qajaq (CKQ), to teach us how To make a beaded (or not beaded) Orange Shirt Pin for the Orange Shirt Day awareness campaign, which seeks to educate about our history of residential schools and honours those who survived, and did not survive, residential school experiences. 

**A limited number of beading kits available at the Hub or by mail (please contact Day Milman to request a kit for pick up at Hart House or by mail (in Canada only-please request by Sept 14.)

Tools & Materials:

  • Shirt Template on paper 
  • Seed and/or bugle beads (orange and colour you’d like for trim 
  • Beading needle 
  • Beading thread 
  • Wax for thread (optional) 
  • Felt or stabilizer 
  • Backing Material (vinyl or leather, or thick fabric)

Using materials from your recycling bin, old magazines and scraps, we’ll make a some stellar cards for all occasions.

Mindful Drawing Mini-books

Let your hand flow and your mind relax as we guide you through a series of simple and relaxing mindful drawing exercises. We’ll teach you how to fold a single sheet of paper into a tiny book, which you can fill with your drawings. All you need is some paper and a drawing tool.

Watercolour Feathers

In the second of our watercolour workshop series, learn to make beautiful watercolour feathers you can cut out and use as bookmarks, decorations, or cards. Learn how to balance subtle colour with striking details to create images of realistic or fantastic feathers.

Embroidered Constellations

Learn basic embroidery techniques while creating your own constellation embroidery hanging. Using basic materials, we will guide you through how to use a hoop, some basic stitches and knots to create a stunning star map you can hang on your wall.

Shibori Inspired Indigo Tie-Dyeing Demo

Get Crafty got outside this fall with the Hart House Farm Student Committee and friends to explore working with natural indigo dye and tie-dyeing techniques inspired by the Japanese art of Shibori. 

In this video demonstration, we show you the process of working with indigo so you can spend a fall afternoon outside making Shibori inspired pieces with some friends. 

Tools and Materials:

  • Indigo Tie Dye Kit from Jacquard or equivalent 
  • Gloves and mask 
  • Bucket 
  • Natural fibre fabrics 
  • Elastics, twine, popsicle sticks, cardboard, clothes pegs etc for binding 
  • Mild detergent 
  • Access to water

Watercolour Geology

In this month’s watercolour tutorial we’ll learn how to make stunning watercolor crystal forms using the natural translucence of the medium. We’ll experiment with adding white ink or acrylic to add facets and highlights. Perfect for cards, gift tags or to hang on your wall.

Get ready for gift-giving for any occasion with our easy tutorial on making gift bags and tags out of recycled materials. Using any material you can find at home, you can customize your tags and bags to make something truly unique to complete your gifts.

Tools and Materials:

  • Newspaper/magazines 
  • Collage materials: newspaper, magazines, posters, paper scraps, maps whatever you can find 
  • Scissors 
  • Glue stick or glue 
  • Tape (optional) 
  • Ribbon or string for handles (optional)

Bath Salts and Body Scrubs

Whether as gifts to share or gifts for you, DIY bath salts and body scrubs are great for self-care, relaxation and soothing the day’s stress away. We’ll give you some basic recipes to make these essential oil infused bath time essentials, and some ideas for decorating the containers.  

Tools and Materials:

  • Epsom salts 
  • Granulated sugar 
  • Coconut oil or olive oil  
  • Various skin safe essential oils (optional) 
  • Spices (think chai, pumpkin pie, vanilla latte!) 
  • Clean mason jars
