It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Steven Penner who passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018 at the young age of 27. It is with joy, however, that we remember his accomplishments and the many friendships he developed during his time at Hart House.

He joined the Hart House Debating Club and served as its president from 2010–11 and was part of the executive for debating from 2009–2013.

Steven was a highly successful competitive debater who won the Canadian National Championships in both Canadian and British Parliamentary debate formats in 2010–11. He represented Hart House at the World Universities Debating Championship and came in 24that Berlin WUDC 2013. He came in second at the 2012–13 North American Debating Championship (NORAM) and won the Hart House Intervarsity in 2016.

Steven was the Chief Adjudicator at the annual Hart House Intervarsity Tournament in October 2017. He was actively involved in the debating community, most recently as the Assistant Coach for the Debate Team at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, New York. His enormous contribution to developing new debaters, supporting competitive debaters and helping to build a welcoming space will not be forgotten.

Steven’s family has asked that donations be made in his memory to the following charities:
Winnipeg Humane Society
Kids in Need of Defence

In his honour, this year’s Hart House Intervarsity tournament will include a memorial to Steven. An annual award will also be launched in his name to recognize ongoing and lasting commitments to the debating community.
