Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships
The Hart House Chess Club sent two teams to New Orleans this December to compete in the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championships, hosted by Tulane University. Hart House Team A (Misha Ivanov, Nikita Gusev, Lloyd Mai and Geordie Derraugh) placed first in the International Division. Team B (Sowjanya Sowrirajan, Ian Mahoney, Karl Cui and Jimmy/Emerich Bartha) also played exceptionally well, especially since it was the first international tournament for some members.
Held annually from December 27 to 30 since 1946, the Pan American Championship is the foremost intercollegiate team competition in the Americas. It is open to any team comprising four players and up to two alternatives from the same post-secondary institution. It is scored by team, not individual points.
The Hart House Chess Club hosts open tournaments, lectures and social events as well as regularly weekly play. The club is open to players of all levels. To learn more, visit harthouse.ca
