U of T Festival of Dance 2014
March 28 & 29, 2014
Hart House Theatre proudly hosts Canada’s largest University dance festival – the U of T Festival of Dance (FoD). Initially created 19 years ago as a venue to provide dance groups on campus the opportunity to perform on stage for an audience, the Festival of Dance has now grown into a celebration of the diversity and prosperity of the U of T dance community. Past events have included over 60 different dance pieces, well over 200 performers and an impressive variety of dance forms including: Jazz, Ballet, Ballroom, Modern, Contact Improv, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Irish, Latin, and Egyptian Belly Dancing, just to name a few. With such an abundance of dance groups associated with U of T, participation in the festival is a great opportunity for dance groups to promote their own work and ventures, and interact with other dancers and forge collaborations.

A note from Emily Dix, the 2014 Festival Director
This year, we’re doing something a little different; we are now recognized through Ulife as the Festival of Dance Executive Council, and are looking to add to the team! Here’s the type of people we’re looking for:
- Dancers and Choreographers
- Film Students and Videographers
- Artists and Designers
- Theatre Students/Lovers (actors, stage managers, lighting designers)
- Promotions/Social Media Savvy People
- Anyone with a love of FoD!
Even if you are unable to participate in the festival itself, we’d love to have you as a part of the council!
The executive council will have monthly meetings and will be responsible for not just organizing the March festival, but for creating and running workshops and other fun dance-related activities throughout the school year, in an effort to raise awareness about FoD and build a strong dance community on campus.
If you know anyone else who would like to be involved, please spread the word. We invite you to like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter – let’s grow this community and have the best festival yet!
2014 Festival Director
Executive Council Member Positions:
Please contact us at email@example.com for more information or to submit application forms.
The Production Manager is responsible for working alongside the Artistic Director to organize any classes, workshops and events run by the Exec Council. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under tight deadlines is a must. Duties will range from helping to schedule meetings, taking minutes, creating contact lists, and other tasks as they arise. Experience in stage management or some other leadership role is an asset.
*this position may turn into the Stage Manager for the show itself. A firm commitment as to whether this person is able to take on SMing for the festival will need to be made in January of 2014; if they are not able to commitment to the show, a call for a stage manager will be made at that time. Application form here >>
Publicity & Outreach Coordinator
The Publicity & Outreach Coordinator’s main role is to connect with dance groups on campus, and to assist with the promotion of those group’s classes, workshops and events, as well as to promote any classes, workshops or events organized by the FOD Exec Council. They should be familiar with social media and marketing techniques, have strong networking skills, and ideally have some existing contacts in the UofT dance community. Secondary roles may include (but are not limited to) promoting the festival itself through creative marketing plans (ie. organizing video promos, flash mobs etc) and reaching out to the Toronto dance community outside of U of T. Application form here >>
The Head Choreographer must be experienced enough in at least one form of dance to be able to choreograph a minimum of one number for the festival. They should have experience working with dancers of different skills levels, and must have a patient and positive attitude when teaching. Ideally, they will run a workshop either in their style of dance, or in a dance related area (ie. stretching for dancers, strength building for dancers etc). They will also assist with the dances featured in the festival’s video transitions, working alongside the Artistic Director and a videographer. There may be several of these if there are different types of dancers. Application form here >>
Other FoD Positions
- Bloggers: We’d like to get a group of people who are interested in different dance related blogs to post a couple times a week. This includes any information any classes or workshops/events you’re doing, and we’ll post it in the blog and share it on facebook & twitter. Let’s all spread the word about dance on campus!
- Photographers/Videographers: We are looking for a group of photographers/videographers interested in coming to any of our events and documenting them.
- Production Assistants: Finally, anyone who’s interested in being involved in some way but isn’t chosen for the Exec, and doesn’t want to focus on one of the things above could go under the label of “Production Assistant”. They will help with things like set-up, and any other random jobs that may arise.
