Warden Bruce Kidd Talks Commonwealth Games in Australia

From an article by Lucy Ardern, Weekend Gold Coast Bulletin, April 27, 2013:

You would struggle to find someone more passionate about the Commonwealth Games than Hart House Warden Bruce Kidd. A former Commonwealth athletics champion and chair of the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport, the Canadian also researches and lectures about the Games at the University of Toronto.

He celebrates it as a sporting contest, marvels at the cultural opportunities it offers and is obsessed by the social advantages it might deliver. Even so, he has serious doubts about the event’s future unless it reverts back to its core purpose.

Prof. Kidd, 69, explained why when he visited the Gold Coast this week to speak to Griffith University students about the Commonwealth Games, which will be hosted here in 2018. ‘‘We need to get the ‘Commonwealth’ back in the Games, or it won’t have any relevance in years to come.’’

Led by Chef Baby, the boys, aged 7 to 12, were given a hands-on opportunity to mix ingredients, pipe out the dough and liberally douse the finished pastries with plenty of chocolate.

While Gallery Grill is best known as a cosmopolitan lunch destination, it also seems to be a hit with the younger crowd that just wants to make a mess in the kitchen and eat their creations. The boys, part of the Petits Chef cooking class run by Mardi Michels, announced at the end of the session that Gallery Grill was the “best field trip ever”.

During the five months of the contest, Ada faced some stiff competition, most notably from Daniel Oh who was runner up in the March 21st finale. In addition to a cash prize, Ada will complete a demo CD in a 10-hour studio session sponsored by CIUT 89.5FM. If you missed Ada’s performance, you’ll have the chance to see her next year as part of the Stages series. As runner up, Daniel Oh will receive a cash prize and an opening act booking. And there is life after Idol. Patrick Simeon, who walked away with the title last year, has just launched his first CD.

The Hart House Music Committee wishes to thank all the talented participants and devoted supporters of 2013 U of T Idol. A special shout out goes to our dynamic and wonderfully talented house band, The Uplifters led by Dave Clarke. Special thanks to Freda Zhang our host and coordinator of U of T Idol and our student judging panel: Ryan, Erin Sean and Chelsea.

We’ll be back again next fall and maybe this time YOU will be the next U of T Idol.

From an article by Fish Griwkowsky, Edmonton Journal, March 19, 2013:

Though the Hart House collection is now monumental with vintage Canadian art, everything within it was once deliberately fresh and contemporary.

That’s an interesting point about the Art Gallery of Alberta’s new show, A Story of Canadian Art: As Told by the Hart House Art Collection. Decades before Group of Seven paintings adorned mouse pads, postage stamps and desk calendars — penetrating our culture wholly — these seven determined “Algonquin school” artists reacted against prescribed European artistic doctrine. They were the punk rockers of their time, intentionally forging a new character for themselves, and us.

Please note: the article implies that William Weston donated Cheam, but it was actually Lawren Harris who donated Abstract (War Painting).

The Hart House Quad has played host to weddings, celebrations and festivals for nearly a century. A verdant outdoor haven for students to study and socialize, it is a versatile space that is in need of revitalization.

The evergreen and mulberry trees in the Quad garden are reaching the end of their lifecycle and preventative arrangements are being made to ensure that any safety or structural hazards are avoided. With only 18” of soil to sustain them, their roots have begun to affect the underlying membrane that protects the roof of the Hart House Theatre and Fitness Centre.

To maintain the structural soundness of the House, while minimizing the environmental impact, the trees will be removed and efforts will be made to transplant any healthy trees to other locations.

A subcommittee will be formed to assess future development. In the interim, new potted trees and shrubbery will take their place to ensure that the Quad is filled with greenery to be enjoyed for years to come. Additionally, the four garden flowerbeds will be replanted and seating areas reconfigured to encourage both group and solitary leisure.

Work will commence this month and should not last longer than a week. We thank you in advance for your patience and look forward to welcoming you back to a safer and even more beautiful quad this spring.

V-Day is a global activist movement to end violence against women and girls. V-Day is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money, and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. V-Day generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM), and sex slavery. http://www.vday.org/home

More on the film: An unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York’s Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright and activist Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of whom were convicted of murder. Through a series of exercises and discussions, the women delve into their pasts and explore the nature of their crimes and the extent of their own culpability. The film culminates in an emotionally charged prison performance of the women’s writing (the first edition of “Any One of Us”) by acclaimed actors Mary Alice, Glenn Close, Hazelle Goodman, Rosie Perez and Marisa Tomei. The film documents both the wrenching personal journeys undertaken by the inmates to find the words that tell their own stories, and the power of those words to move the outside world. The event is free, but donations are encouraged, contributing towards the Schlifer Clinic: The Barbra Schlifer Clinic offers legal representation, professional counselling and multilingual interpretation to women who have experienced violence. Our diverse, skilled and compassionate staff accompany women through personal and practical transformation, helping them to build lives free from violence. We are a centre by, for and about women. We amplify women’s voices and cultivate their skills and resilience. Together with our donors and volunteers, we are active in changing the conditions that threaten women’s safety, dignity and equality. There will be refreshments. See you there!
