You are invited to join a 3-week online seminar of cross-campus conversations hosted by the University of Cape Town’s Global Citizenship Programme and the University of Toronto’s Hart House.
The sessions are designed for meaningful conversations on student activism, focusing on strategies and tools used in student movements and what it means to achieve tangible change. We will be using case studies from each campus, as well as our own experiences as students, as the starting point for reflection, sharing and learning.
All sessions will take place on Zoom, an online video communications tool, which will allow us to all be in a virtual classroom together.
Requirements / Participation Expectations
- Stable internet connection
- Device with a webcam and microphone (either a computer or a smartphone)
- Attend all 3 sessions
- Complete a short activity before the first session
- Complete a short reflection blog posts
Dates and Times of the Sessions
- Session 1: Connecting Contexts Getting to know one another and sharing our experiences and ideas of student activism. Wednesday, March 6, 2019 – 9am-11am (Toronto time) | 4pm – 6pm (South Africa time)
- Session 2: Strategize. Mobilize. Resist. Exploring case studies of student activism on our campuses, focusing on the ideologies, strategies, and tools used in each case. Wednesday, March 13, 2019 – 9 am-11a m (Toronto time) | 4 pm – 6 pm (South Africa time)
- Session 3: Achieving Meaningful and Tangible Change Taking our learnings forward into day-to-day action. Wednesday, March 20 – 9am-11am (Toronto time) | 4 pm – 6 pm (South Africa time)
Please fill in the application form to be considered for the programme. Given limited spaces, those who are accepted are expected to attend all three sessions. Application Deadline is Monday, February 25. The intention is that by the end of this seminar series we will all be better equipped to achieve meaningful change in our spaces of influence. We hope that you will join us in making this an insightful and energizing experience. Selected U of T students will receive Credit for the Co-Curricular Record.
