Night of Ideas 2018

To sleep or not to sleep

Night of Ideas presented by Hart House in partnership with the Cultural Service of the French Embassy in Canada and the Art Museum at University of Toronto.

On January 25, 2018, Hart House became one of the first Canadian sites to host this French-initiated global, all-night event. Launched in London and Berlin in 2012 and 2014, the Night of Ideas is a concept coined by the Institut Français and the cultural services of the French Embassies. The 2017 edition was the first simultaneous edition presented in places of culture and knowledge in over 50 cities across the globe.

Scheduled in conjunction with the Art Museum’s exhibition Figures of Sleep, this gathering of award-winning, internationally recognized writers, researchers and performers included, among others, Spanish architectural historian and theorist Beatriz Colomina who examined the bedroom as an architectural space turned modern day office; French geographer Luc Gwiazdzinski considering the ways in which city life is shaped by the 24-hour cycle; US art historian Tom McDonough who looked at the role of boredom in the visual arts in a 24/7 world; and U of T’s Janine Rivière exploring the history of nightmares and their interpretation from medical, political, religious and supernatural perspectives.

Beginning at 7 pm and lasting until the dawn, Night of Ideas invited the city into Hart House to mingle with artists, writers, historians, philosophers, neuroscientists and other restless minds to explore all aspects of sleep. A midnight swim in the pool, Toronto artist Jon Sasaki’s exhaustion dance performance, a screening of Andy Warhol’s film Sleep and Max Richter’s 8-hour lullaby kept visitors occupied throughout the night. Those in need of refreshment could enjoy food and drinks by the fireplace and could even curl up in a sleep room for a nap.

Part of the excitement included an Instagram sweepstakes that sent one lucky winner to Paris, France. View Night of Ideas through the images posted by visitors on Instagram.
