Details: Come and hear 2016 Hart House Hancock Lecturer Azeezah Kanji, together with noted social activist Desmond Cole, as they discuss how Canada’s social and political fabric is being undermined by inflammatory public rhetoric and divisive actions delivered in the name of “public security.” Join the conversation by posting to @ciut895fm before the show.

Moderated by Abdi Hersi., Beyond the Headlines (BTH) is a live to air, one-hour current affairs talk radio show aimed at providing a greater understanding and thoughtful discussion of the various policy issues in our daily news headlines. BTH aims to take listeners beyond the immediacy of our daily news. The show is produced and hosted by Masters of Public Policy students at the University of Toronto’s School of Public Policy of Governance.

Azeezah KanjiAzeezah Kanji

Azeezah Kanji is a legal scholar, activist, and writer based in Toronto. She received her JD from University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law, and LLM specializing in Islamic Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She serves as Programming Coordinator at Noor Cultural Centre, and is a frequent contributor to Canadian media (including in the National Post, Toronto Star, and Rabble) on issues of national security, multiculturalism, and Muslims in Canada.

Desmond ColeDesmond Cole, Moderator

Desmond Cole is an activist, author and an award-winning freelance journalist. He is a weekly columnist at the Toronto Star, and his writing also appears in Torontoist, Walrus, NOW magazine, VICE, and Ethnic Aisle. Desmond hosts a radio program every Sunday afternoon on Newstalk1010, and co-hosts a podcast on Canadian politics called Canadaland Commons. He is currently working on his first book about the past and present experiences of black Canadians.

Abdi-HersiAbdi Hersi, Show Host

As a proud Torontonian, Abdi Hersi joins the School of Public Policy and Governance and the Beyond The Headlines team from the University of Toronto with a background in American Studies, Political Science and History. He has a special interest in researching potential improvements in our educational systems. Upon graduating from the Masters of Public Policy program, he hopes to address the institutional barriers that marginalized communities face with respect to quality secondary education, as well as access to post-secondary institutions. Downtime activities: playing basketball, discussing politics with friends, mentoring youth and above all, learning new things.
