Hart House Chess Club

Introduction

The Hart House Chess Club offers a friendly gathering place for chess-lovers of all skill levels both at the University of Toronto and across the Greater Toronto Area. We host regular internal competitions, open tournaments, guest lectures, lessons and workshops, and casual open play.

We also routinely compete in and sometimes organize national and international events, including the Canadian University Chess Championship, the Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Championship and the Ivy League Chess Challenge.

The University of Toronto Chess Club was founded in 1895 and found a home at Hart House in 1919, making it the oldest chess club in Canada with an uninterrupted history of over 125 years! Membership is open to all, so we hope you will join us on Fridays, 4–11pm in the Hart House Reading Room to play a game of chess, learn a new skill, and connect with new and old friends!
