September Newsletter

Hello Photographers!

To all those who have just recently joined us we would like to start off by saying: Welcome to the Hart House Camera Club. We’re so pleased that you’re interested in getting involved and we hope that we’ll get to see you at some of our upcoming events and classes. To everyone else, welcome back to another great year of photography. So without further ado, here are the different ways you can get involved this year:

Step #1: Find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, join us on Flickr or visit our website .

Ok, maybe a just subset of those options will do, but if you want to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities, that is the best way to keep in touch. We’ll be posting updates regularly, so check back often!

Step #2: Come out to our events.

Throughout the year, the Hart House Camera Club will be hosting events and excursions open to members and non-members alike. In the past we visited High Park for an afternoon of photography, got access to the roof of the Bay Adelaide Center and organized a photoshoot with the Silhouettes Dance Company. You can always find an up-to-date list of our events on our website:

Thus far, we have three events planned for the end of September and October, to give our new members a chance to come out, meet the executive and some of our members. So mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

Photo Scavenger Hunt

Our first event of the year will be a Photo Scavenger Hunt this Friday (September 28th) from 4-6 pm. We’re meeting on the south steps of Hart House before sending you off with a list of pictures to return with. The team that returns with the best, most creative, and largest number of pictures gets a prize! As you search, chat with your peers, enjoy some of the most relaxing spots on campus, and take a peek at some gorgeous buildings. Come on out, make some new friends, and snap some great shots of things you might not normally see during your average school day! Please bring yourself, your camera, and a card reader so we can review photos at the end of the search. Join our event on Facebook:

Fall Open Meeting

The Camera Club is having an open meeting for all members and interested photographers on Monday, October 1 from 6:30 – 9 pm. We will be introducing the club’s executive, showing our facilities and sharing our direction for the year. Bring your camera, questions, and enthusiasm. There will be plenty of time to mingle with fellow photographers while enjoying some refreshments. It will also feature a guest speaker from the Hart House Underwater Club who will be holding a presentation about Underwater Photography. Join our event on Facebook:

Silhouettes Outdoor Photoshoot

For the third time the Hart House Camera Club is hosting a joint photoshoot with the Silhouettes Dance Company. On Saturday, October 13, from 12 – 4 pm we will be doing a fall outdoor photoshoot around U of T campus. So come out, practice your outdoor photography skills and take some great pictures of dancers! Don’t forget to bring your camera and all your creativity! The goal of this event is for you to get some experience at a hands-on photoshoot and for the Silhouettes Dance Company to get some great pictures they can use on their website and for promotional material.

Step #3: Enroll in a class (or two)

As always, Hart House is offering a range of photography classes to photographers of every skill level. Ever wanted to learn how to develop your own film? Light a studio properly? Make yourself just generally better? We’ll we’ve got you covered. Check out our website for more details:

Step #4: Check out our facilities.

At the Hart House Camera Club, we’re very proud of our darkrooms (both digital and analog). We have a range of rooms, enlargers and equipment that will be able to accommodate all but the most demanding photographers. A $25 membership will get you full access to our darkrooms (chemicals included) for a full year. Visit one of our four curators: Tommy Aird, Nicolas Scroggins, Nicole White or Natalie Symchych, during their scheduled office hours (found on our website.)

Step #5: Ask us your questions (we don’t bite!)

If you have any questions, concerns or you would like to get more involved in the club, don’t hesitate to contact us at

We hope to see you all on Friday and/or Monday!
